Night of the falling stars. How we found the perfect spot for watching the Perseids

In this article
As mid-August approaches, one special date appears on the calendar of every lover of nature and the night sky - August 12th. This is the period when the Perseids, one of the most famous meteor showers, reach their peak activity.
For us, it's a great excuse to do something very simple: go out into the garden in the evening, turn off the lights, put our phones away, and just look at the sky for a while.
Last year, we decided to prepare for this event properly. Living in the countryside, we are very lucky in this regard - we don't have to drive far or specifically look for a place away from city lights. Just stepping out into the garden is enough.
We started the evening with a bonfire. The warmth from the wood, calm conversations, and the characteristic smell of smoke drifting through the increasingly cool night air made this evening something special from the very beginning.
However, we didn't expect that the biggest challenge would turn out to be... finding a truly comfortable place to observe the sky for several hours.
Great testing, or how (not) to watch shooting stars
We started classically - with a blanket spread out on the grass.
Romantic? Very.
Comfortable? For the first fifteen minutes or so.
After a while, you start squirming, adjusting your position, and looking for a way to comfortably look straight up. On top of that, in the evening, the ground starts releasing moisture and cold, which you quickly begin to feel.
A quick change of strategy - garden lounge chairs.
It was better, but still not perfect. After a while, your back starts demanding a change of position, and instead of looking for the next meteor, you find yourself thinking more about how to get comfortable.
That night, we probably tested every obvious option.
And then we remembered something that had been just a few meters away the whole time.
And then we moved to a Mexican hammock
That was the moment the whole evening suddenly started looking completely different.
We moved to our Mexican hammock and laid down diagonally - the way hammocks are traditionally used in Mexico.
Suddenly, instead of fighting for a position, we could just lie there and look at the sky.
Why did the hammock work so well for watching the Perseids?
A comfortable position for looking at the sky.
With the right position in the hammock, the body can rest, and the eyes naturally point toward the sky. You don't have to support your head or look for a new position all the time.
No contact with the cold and damp ground.
The hammock is suspended above the grass, so the problem of moisture and cold from the ground practically disappears.
Freedom of body positioning.
The flexible weave of a traditional Mexican hammock adapts to the user instead of forcing one rigid position.
And of course, the gentle swaying.
After a few minutes, you really start to forget about everything else.
Only silence, the night, and the sky remain.

And when it got cold, a Mexican blanket made its way into the hammock
And this is where the second hero of the evening appeared.
The temperature began to drop, so we brought a cotton Mexican blanket from the house.
This time, however, we didn't spread it on the ground.
The blanket went into the hammock with us and served simply to cover us up.
And that turned out to be the perfect solution.
The hammock allowed us to observe the sky comfortably, and the large cotton blanket provided that extra layer of warmth that we started needing as the night progressed.
We wrapped ourselves in it, got more comfortable, and suddenly realized we had no desire to go back inside.
That was when we understood how well a Mexican hammock and a Mexican blanket complement each other.
On a warm day, the hammock provides lightness and breathability.
When the temperature drops in the evening, you just need to add a blanket.
And you can stay under the open sky for much longer.
You can find more about the blankets themselves, their uses, and natural cotton here:

And then something happened that we hadn't planned at all
We were supposed to watch the Perseids.
We weren't supposed to sleep in the garden.
But we were so comfortable, warm, and peaceful that at one point we simply... fell asleep in the hammock under the open sky, covered by our Mexican blanket.
And perhaps that is the moment we remembered best.
Not the number of meteors.
Not the time we saw the brightest trail in the sky.
Just the feeling that there was nowhere to go.
That you could stay for just a while longer.
Hammock and blanket - sometimes the simplest things create the best memories
That August night reminded us why we believe so much in what we do at Hamakija.pl.
A Mexican hammock doesn't have to be just a piece of garden furniture meant for an afternoon nap.
It can be a place for reading a book, talking, resting after work, spending time with children - or watching shooting stars late into the night.
It's the same with a Mexican blanket.
At home, it can lie on the sofa.
In the car, it can join us on a family trip.
In the summer, it can go on a picnic.
And during a cool August night - into the hammock, so we can wrap ourselves in it and stay under the stars a little longer.
These are the applications we like best.
Not the ones invented for a catalog.
The ones that emerge on their own during real life.
In August, we're doing it again
That night stayed with us so strongly that we want to repeat it in August 2026.
The plan is simple:
a hammock, a cotton blanket from Mexico, a dark garden, and the night sky.
Without a special script.
Because if the previous Perseid night taught us anything, it's that the best moments very often don't need much preparation.
Sometimes it's enough to lie down comfortably, cover yourself with a blanket, and look up.
What about you? Do you have your own rituals for Perseid night? 🌠
