Over the past few years, we have installed hammocks and hammock chairs in hundreds of different places - from gardens and treehouses to modern apartments and small balconies in apartment blocks. In this guide, we have gathered experience from our own installations and answers to the most frequent questions from Hamakija customers. If you are planning to buy a hammock or are currently looking for the best way to install one, this article is for you.

Which hammock installation method to choose?

Before you start the installation, check what stable mounting points are available in your chosen spot. A hammock can be hung in many ways – you don’t always need two trees.

Location Most commonly used installation method
Garden with two trees Tree straps or appropriately selected ropes
Garden with one tree Tree and wall, post, or stable structure
Garden without trees Hammock stand or two prepared structural points
Terrace or gazebo Beams and structural posts
Balcony Load-bearing elements of the building or a fitted stand
House or apartment Two load-bearing walls or appropriate building structure
Hammock chair Main ceiling, structural beam, or a stable branch

In the following part of the guide, we discuss each of these methods in detail.

    You are wonderful!

How much space does a hammock need and at what height should it be hung?

This is one of the most frequent questions from our customers. Many people worry that a large family hammock requires a huge garden. In practice, it usually turns out that there is plenty of space.

In the Hamakija offer, you will find both models for one person and very large family hammocks, such as Playa XL, Tropical XL, Tropical XXL, Gringo XXL and Jardin L. The largest models, such as Tropical XXL and Gringo XXL, reach about 2.5–3 meters of usable width when spread out. It is this space that allows two adults, a parent with children, and sometimes even an entire family to rest comfortably in the hammock.

For a comfortable installation, it is worth following the values below:

    Installation parameter Recommended value
    Distance between mounting points 3.5 - 5 m
Height of mounting points 180 - 220 cm
Height of the middle of the hammock under load 40 - 60 cm

If you have more space, the length can be easily adjusted using ropes, straps, or mounting chains. Remember that a hammock should not be as tight as a string. A gentle arc is completely natural and has a huge impact on the comfort of rest.

The given values are indicative. The final height of the mounting points depends on:

    • the length of the specific hammock,
    • the distance between the points,
    • the flexibility of the weave,
    • the adjustment method,
    • the preferred height above the ground.

The greater the distance between the mounting points, the higher you usually need to hang the ropes or straps. It is worth leaving the possibility of adjustment, because the hammock weave can work slightly during use and adapt to body weight.

Cotton or nylon hammock - does the installation method differ?

In terms of installation, both types of hammocks are hung in an identical way. Differences only appear during daily use.

Cotton models (Tropical XL, Tropical XXL, Playa XL) are exceptionally soft and pleasant to the touch. On the other hand, nylon models (Gringo XXL, Jardin L) were created with more demanding conditions in mind. Nylon is exceptionally durable, dries faster after rain, and works perfectly where the hammock remains outside for most of the season. This is exactly why we often call the Gringo XXL a hammock for special tasks.

How to install a hammock between trees?

This is definitely the most popular and atmospheric installation method. If you have two properly spaced trees, creating your own relaxation zone will take just a few minutes.

To safely hang a hammock, it is best to use:

    • wide tree straps,

    • special hammock ropes,

    • dedicated mounting kits

We never recommend screwing hooks directly into live trees. Straps not only protect the bark from damage but also allow for easy height adjustment and quick disassembly of the hammock after the season. In our garden, hammocks hung between trees by the treehouse for many years.

Installing a hammock between trees step by step

    1. Check the condition of both trees. They should be healthy, stable, and sufficiently thick.
    2. Wrap each tree with a wide strap or a properly selected rope.
    3. Set the mounting points at a similar height.
    4. Connect the straps to the hammock using carabiners.
    5. Adjust the length so that the hammock forms a natural arc.
    6. Check if the middle of the hammock under load is at a safe height above the ground.
    7. Before first use, carefully load the hammock and check all connections.

If you use a rope, make sure it does not chafe the tree bark or the hammock loops. In areas of intense friction, it is worth using wide straps, appropriate guards, or elements intended for such connections.

Do not hang a hammock on dead, damaged, or very thin trees. Also, pay attention to the condition of branches located directly above the relaxation spot.

How to install a hammock if you only have one tree?

The lack of a second tree does not mean you have to give up on a hammock. One end can be attached to a healthy tree, and the other to a properly prepared structural point.

    It can be:

    • a building wall,
    • a wooden or steel structural post,
    • a gazebo beam,
    • a stable pergola element,
    • a special one-sided hammock stand.

Secure the tree with a wide strap, and choose the second point according to the type of structure. If the hammock is to be attached to a wall, the anchor installation method should be adapted to the material of which the building is made.

Both points must be stable and prepared to carry loads generated during the use of the hammock. Do not use random fence elements, light decorative posts, or structures whose load-bearing capacity you are not sure of.

How to install a hammock without trees?

This is one of the most frequent questions from people who have a new garden, a large terrace, or a plot of land without appropriately spaced trees.

    You have several options:

    Hammock on a stand

The simplest solution that does not require drilling or preparing fixed mounting points.

    The stand can be placed:

    • in the garden,
    • on the terrace,
    • on a larger balcony,
    • in a winter garden,
    • at home.

The most important thing is to match the length of the stand to the total length of the hammock and check the maximum load of the structure.

    Hammock between two posts

The posts must be properly designed, set, and prepared to take over the forces generated during the use of the hammock.

It is not enough to use two light poles driven into the ground. The structure should be stable even when the hammock starts to swing.

Hammock between a wall and a post

This is a popular solution for terraces and gazebos. One end of the hammock is attached to the building structure, and the other to a properly prepared post.

Hammock under a pergola or canopy

A hammock can also be hung between the structural elements of a pergola, provided that the beams and posts were designed to carry the appropriate load.

Decorative elements, thin slats, and light aluminum structures are not always suitable for such use.

How to install a hammock on a stand?

A stand is a great solution for people who want to freely change the position of the hammock or do not have suitable trees and structural points.

    Before buying a stand, check:

    • its total length,
    • adjustment range,
    • maximum permissible load,
    • width and stability of the base,
    • possibility of outdoor use,
    • compatibility with the length of the chosen hammock.

After setting the structure on a flat and stable surface, attach the hammock on both sides. If the stand has adjustment chains, choose links such that the hammock forms a clear, but not excessively deep arc.

The middle of the loaded hammock should not touch the ground or the stand elements.

Does every hammock fit every stand?

Not always. Hammocks differ in total length, width, and loop finishing method. Therefore, it is worth comparing the dimensions of both products before purchasing.

A too-short hammock may require extension with an appropriate chain or a dedicated adjustment system. Conversely, a model that is too long may hang too low and touch the ground.

Installing a hammock to a building wall

What to prepare before installing a hammock to a wall?

Depending on the type of structure, you may need:

    • two properly selected mounting points,
    • carabiners with a known load capacity,
    • a rope or chain for adjustment,
    • a drill and an appropriate drill bit,
    • tools for installing the chosen system,
    • a tape measure and pencil,
    • a detector for electrical installations and metal construction elements.

Before drilling, ensure that there are no electrical cables, pipes, or other installations in the chosen spot.

Do not choose an anchor solely based on the screw diameter. The wall material, anchoring depth, distance from the edge, and the load of the entire system also matter.

In case of doubt, it is worth consulting the installation with an experienced installer or structural engineer.

Installing a hammock between two walls

The walls do not have to be perfectly parallel. A hammock can also be hung between walls set at an angle to each other, provided that appropriate space is maintained and stable mounting points are used.

Also, leave free space on the sides of the hammock. While sitting down, getting out, and swinging, the material may shift to the sides.

Can a hammock be installed at home?

Yes! More and more people are using hammocks not only in the garden but also indoors. The most popular mounting locations are the living room, children's or teenager's room, home office, mezzanine, and conservatory. Models such as the Playa XL and Tropical XL work particularly well here, creating a unique space for reading books, watching movies, or taking a short afternoon nap.

A hammock can also be installed across a larger room or in a wide passage between rooms, provided both points are secured to appropriate structural elements.

Do not mount a hammock to:

    • a thin partition wall without confirming its load-bearing capacity,
    • drywall alone,
    • furniture units,
    • a balustrade,
    • a lightweight screen,
    • decorative elements.

Since a hammock can be quickly removed from the carabiners, permanent mounting points do not mean the fabric must hang in the room at all times.

Can a hammock be mounted on a balcony?

Definitely. More and more of our customers live in apartments or blocks of flats and are looking for a way to create their own relaxation zone without needing a garden.

Mexican hammock mounted on an apartment balcony.

In the photo above, we present one example of such an installation. The hammock was attached between two structural elements of the balcony, making it possible to create a comfortable place to rest without taking up extra floor space.

The following models work particularly well on balconies: Playa XL, Tropical XL, Margarita L, Descanso L, and Jardin L. Before installation, make sure that the chosen attachment points are load-bearing structural elements of the building. Our mounting kit, equipped with an adjustable chain and carabiners, also works very well for these types of installations. Many customers later admit that the balcony with a hammock becomes their favorite spot for morning coffee or an evening book.

Do not automatically treat a balcony railing as a point meant for mounting a hammock. Railings are designed primarily as a safety guard against falling, not as an element meant to hold additional loads.

Before mounting in a block of flats, it is also worth checking:

    • the housing community or cooperative regulations,
    • the routing of installations in the walls,
    • the type of balcony construction,
    • the possibility of drilling holes in the facade,
    • sufficient space for swinging freely.

How to mount a hammock on a terrace, in a gazebo, or under a pergola?

A terrace and gazebo are among the best places for a hammock. The roof limits direct exposure to rain and sun, and stable structural elements often allow for the creation of a comfortable relaxation zone.

A hammock can be mounted between:

    • two structural beams,
    • two posts,
    • a post and a building wall,
    • a beam and a suitably prepared point in the wall,
    • structural elements of a pergola.

For wood, appropriately selected mounts designed for timber structures are used. It is important that the screw or mount is located in a solid structural element and not in a thin finishing board.

Not every pergola is suitable for hanging a hammock. Special caution should be exercised with lightweight aluminum pergolas, folding structures, and roofs whose posts are not permanently connected to the ground.

Relaxation manual - how to lie in a hammock correctly?

This is one of the most common mistakes. Many people, when lying in a hammock for the first time, lie exactly along its axis. This is not the correct position in a Mexican hammock.

Proper diagonal lying position in a Hamakija Mexican hammock

In a traditional Mexican hammock, we lie diagonally. Thanks to this:

    • the body lies flatter (which is healthier for the spine),

    • the material opens wide and does not obstruct the view,

    • the back receives much better support,

    • the rest becomes much more comfortable.

This is precisely why people who have previously only used narrow store-bought hammocks are so positively surprised by the comfort of the Descanso L and Jardin L models.

How to mount a hammock chair?

If you have limited space, a hammock chair (also called a Brazilian chair) can be a great solution. Our offer includes cotton models (Brasil XXL, Maya XL, Merida XXL) and nylon ones (Brasilera XXL, Mayo XL).

The largest Hamakija hammock chairs are significantly bigger than most models available in stores. They easily accommodate an adult and allow for comfortably sitting with a book, laptop, or cup of coffee.

Mounting a hammock chair to the ceiling and on the terrace

This is one of the most frequently chosen solutions. A hanging chair can be attached to a reinforced concrete slab, a wooden structural beam, a covered terrace, a balcony, or a loggia.

⚠️ Important: Do not mount a chair solely to drywall or suspended ceilings!

Before mounting, determine where the actual ceiling structure is located. A suspended ceiling can be several centimeters or more below the structural element of the building.

Also, leave enough space in front of the chair and to its sides. When swinging, the feet, spreader bar, and material should not hit walls, furniture, or the railing.

The suspension height can be adjusted using a suitably selected rope or chain. The seat should be at a height that allows you to sit down and stand up comfortably and safely.

How to mount a hammock chair in the garden?

A hammock chair can be hung from a healthy, stable branch or from a structural beam of a gazebo.

The simplest mounting to a branch is as follows:

    1. Check the condition of the tree and the branch.
    2. Pass a wide strap or appropriate rope over the branch.
    3. Secure the connection to prevent slipping and abrasion.
    4. Attach a carabiner.
    5. Hang the chair and set the appropriate seat height.
    6. Carefully check the stability of the entire system.

Do not judge the strength of a branch solely on its thickness. The condition of the tree, the point where the branch meets the trunk, the presence of cracks, rot, and damage are also important.

If you do not have a suitable tree or beam, you can use a stand designed for hammock chairs.

Which hammock mounting kit to choose?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions. That is why we have prepared a complete Hamakija mounting kit (coming soon), which we use ourselves during installations for our customers.

What to pay attention to when buying accessories?

Not all carabiners, ropes, and mounts available in stores are intended to carry the loads associated with using a hammock.

    Before purchasing, check:

    • the declared maximum load,
    • the product's intended use,
    • the material of construction,
    • corrosion resistance,
    • the carabiner locking mechanism,
    • compatibility with hammock loops,
    • manufacturer's installation recommendations.

Do not use small decorative carabiners, random ropes, or worn-out elements whose history and parameters you do not know.

Most common mistakes during hammock installation

    Too much tension

A hammock pulled tight like a string can be less comfortable, and greater forces then act on the mounting points. The material should form a natural arc.

    Hanging too low

After getting into the hammock, the weave gently stretches. Before final adjustment, check the height under load.

    Mounting to a random element

A railing, thin post, lightweight pergola, or partition wall may look stable, but they may not be prepared to take on the loads generated while swinging.

Lack of space on the sides

A hammock needs space not only between the mounting points. Leave free space on the sides and under the hammock as well.

    Incorrectly selected accessories

Mounting elements should have specific parameters and be intended for the given application.

    Lack of regular inspection

Ropes, straps, carabiners, and mounting points work during use. It is worth regularly checking for fraying, looseness, corrosion, or damage.

    Safety inspection before first use

    After finishing the installation:

    1. Check the tightening and closure of all connections.
    2. Ensure the rope or strap does not shift on the mounting point.
    3. Examine the hammock loops and the contact points with the carabiners.
    4. Gently load the hammock without making sudden movements.
    5. Check if the mounting points move or make disturbing sounds.
    6. After the first few uses, re-check the entire system.
    7. Repeat the inspection regularly during the season.

If children use the hammock, explain to them that the hammock is for resting and calm swinging, not for jumping or acrobatics.

Our projects - hammocks and hammock chairs in practice

The best advertisement for a hammock is real-life projects and satisfied customers. In the content of this blog, you can see how our products look in everyday use in various spaces.

    Hammock on an apartment balcony

Every space is different, which is why we always try to choose a solution tailored to the specific area and the customer's needs.

Meet Wojtek - our hammock installation specialist

Wojtek during a professional hammock installation for a Hamakija customer

Wojtek is behind most of our projects. For over 20 years, he has been helping customers create places they enjoy returning to for morning coffee, an afternoon book, or family rest. Over these years, he has probably seen it all – hammocks hung between old trees, modern apartments in the city center, small balconies in blocks of flats, terraces, gazebos, summer houses, or children's rooms.

When we ask him about the most common mistake made while hanging a hammock, he almost always answers:

“People tighten the hammock too much. A hammock is supposed to invite you to rest, not look like a tow rope for a truck.”

And there is a lot of truth in that. That is why Wojtek doesn't just install hammocks – he helps hang them so that you get maximum comfort out of them.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is it possible to mount a hammock indoors?

Yes. More and more people are choosing to install hammocks inside their homes and apartments. The key is to use the right anchors (e.g., chemical anchors) and mount them into load-bearing walls or the structural ceiling.

Can a hammock be mounted without trees?

Yes. You can use a stand, structural pillars, a building wall, gazebo beams, or a properly designed pergola.

Is one tree enough to mount a hammock?

Yes. One end can be attached to a tree and the other to a wall, pillar, gazebo structure, or a special single-sided stand.

Can a hammock be hung from a balcony railing?

You should not do this without confirmation that the structure was designed to bear such loads. In most cases, it is safer to use a proper structural element of the building or a stand.

Will a pergola support a hammock?

That depends on its construction. A sturdy wooden pergola may have suitable beams and posts, but lightweight decorative or aluminum pergolas are not always suitable for mounting a hammock.

Must a hammock hang perfectly level?

It is best to set the attachment points at a similar height, but a slight difference does not always prevent comfortable use. The most important thing is a stable attachment and the proper positioning of the hammock.

How often should mountings be checked?

It is worth checking the system before the start of the season, after the first few uses, after strong winds or heavy rain, and whenever you notice any looseness, corrosion, or fraying.

Can a hammock be left outside for the entire season?

Nylon models, such as Gringo XXL or Jardin L, are very resistant to weather conditions and dry quickly. However, to extend the lifespan of any hammock, we always recommend taking it down during prolonged rainfall and outside of the summer season.

What weight can a hammock withstand?

Each model has a maximum weight capacity specified by the manufacturer (usually from 150 kg up to 300 kg for XXL models). You can always find the exact technical specifications on the specific product page in our store.

Do you install hammocks outside of Warsaw and Łódź?

Our main area of operation is Warsaw, Łódź, and their surroundings; however, for specific or larger projects, we also perform installations in other locations in Poland. Contact us to discuss the details.

Can I install a hammock by myself?

Of course, with our mounting kit and basic tools (a drill, wrenches), it is perfectly possible. However, if you have doubts about the strength of your wall or ceiling, it is worth consulting with us before drilling.

    Summary

Regardless of whether you choose the family-sized Tropical XXL, the exceptionally durable Gringo XXL, the versatile Playa XL, or one of our large hammock chairs, proper mounting is the key to comfortable relaxation.

A well-hung hammock should not look like a taut rope. It should form a gentle, natural arc that allows the material to perfectly conform to the shape of your body. And if you aren't sure how to do it best – write to us. We will be happy to advise you, help you choose the right mounts, or prepare an individual quote for installation. Because at Hamakija, we believe that a good hammock is not just a product – it’s a place you want to return to every day. 🌿🏡
